At some time in our life we will be affected by back pain. Originating anywhere along the spine from the base of the skull to the tip of our coccyx (tail bone) back pain can rear its ugly head. It may be but a minor annoyance that can be ‘stretched out’ or at the other end of the scale acute 10/10 pain that may require medical and / or surgical intervention or may even leave someone with ongoing chronic pain.
So let’s have a look at our spine…….

As you can see by the diagram above the spine (vertebral column) has five sections each made up of separate bones called vertebrae and between each vertebrae is a small space that has a ‘spongy’ disc which provides cushioning so there is no ‘bone on bone’. These are all held together by ligaments and muscles.
Our spine also houses our spinal cord which originates from the base of our brain and runs the whole length of the spine to the tip of the coccyx (tail-bone). As the spinal cord makes its way down the spine at each vertebra it sends out nerves that go to all the different parts of the body.
The reasons we experience back pain are many and varied and may include:
- Poor posture
- Lack of exercise
- Lifting heavy weights (incorrectly or just too heavy)
- Sudden twisting movements
- Sciatica
- Muscle imbalance or tightness
- Degenerative issues, such as, arthritis or osteoporosis
This list is just an example of some of the issues that may cause back pain it is by no means exhaustive.
If you are experiencing back discomfort of any sort then following the advice below is important:
